A new website!

I don't pretend to be a techie.  There is simply no disguising the fact that I am not terribly good with computers.  Add that to the fact that I am the daughter of one of Canada's pioneers of personal computing and managed to ignore the newest computing prototypes lying around my dad's office in the early 70's.  I've always preferred to spend my time creating art and studying fashion than learn how to program. But all that is changing!

My fabulous, talented next door neighbor and friend, J'aime, offered to teach me how to make my own website for Kate Studio and I am finally ready to reveal it.  She taught me what buttons to press, where to look for what I need and made me really think about the message I want to convey in the my site.  Go take a looksy -- it's

www.katestudio.net

Ta da!  There is still so much I would like to add.  Perhaps a few new tabs and a place to sell my jewelry online, but that will come.  In the meantime, I have moved my blog over to the website, so please go there and sign up your email to keep receiving news.  I am excited about the new beginning of my studio.

Thank you for everything!
Love kath.

et Our Members
I was honored to be featured in the Whatcom Art Guild's May Issue Newsletter.   I am new to Bellingham and the Art Guild, so it was a wonderful way to be welcomed to the community!  Here is the article:

Introducing Kathey Piros

Kathey is a new artist at Whatcom Art Market and owner of Kate Studio.
A life-long artist, former art teacher in California Bay Area schools,  Kath Piros says that the turning point in her life happened three years ago when her husband gave her a kiln, and she began creating
fused glass jewelry. At that time her daughter was modeling clothing, and Kathey noticed the lack of matching jewelry to enhance particular fashion ensembles. She approached designers with her vision, and her new jewelry business was born.

Fast forward to last summer when the Piros family moved to Bellingham to be close to their B.C. roots. The house they bought in Fairhaven had an art studio, and a life-long dream became a realityKate Studio.

Kath is thrilled to be working with kids again, offering 5-week sessions which include the Masters, sculpture, and self-portraits…or how about leather working, fused glass, zendoodles, or collaging? She teaches adults too. Kathey has all the materials, experience, and patience to work with students of all ages. You can find out about her current classes for kids or adults on www.katestudios.blogspot.com

And artists, here’s the bonus—Kath is open to sharing and happy to rent out her studio to other artists! You will want to meet this creative woman in her studio or at her well-appointed booth at the
Art Market.

The Art of the Zendoodle

Lots of fun Zendoodling the night away and embellishing with sparkly papers, inks and watercolor pencils.   Students learned the differences between zendoodles, doodles and zentangling, and with their new multi-media journal they were given, we drew, shaded, inked and pasted our masterpieces.

Playing with my Palette Knife

At the Whatcom Art Guild meeting a couple of weeks ago, I entered a raffle and won a workshop in abstract, textural painting with Carrelyn Banner of Cosmic Light Studio.  As I love to experiment with color and texture, I was excited about learning something new.

Carrelyn did not disappoint.  A wonderful abstract artist, she is also an aficionado of Golden Artist mediums, and she introduced me to many of the types in their line.  She had me try everything from the super course pumice gel to the fine self leveling clear gel gloss, then asked me to play with it all, adding color, mixing mediums and monoprinting with textural plates.

It was so much fun to take the time to glop on different mediums with my palette knife and scrape them around to see what they can do.  My favorite was the glass bead gel, as it goes in a little coarse, but dries all sparkly!

Looking forward to passing on some of these techniques and checking out many more of Golden's mediums.
